what is a wireless survey?

A wireless site survey, also referred to as an RF (Radio Frequency) site survey, is an engineering process used to physically measure or predict, and visually represent various metrics of an RF environment. The purpose of the RF Site Survey generally is to aid in the planning and design of a wireless network infrastructure that can deliver the required coverage, data throughput, capacity, and roaming capability.

Data gathered from the survey process can also be analyzed by a technician to develop interference mitigation plans, identify rogue RF carriers, and develop plans to improve the performance of an existing wireless network.

The visual representations of collected data are provided in the form of heat maps. Various heat maps are used to reflect different RF spectrum characteristics or WLAN performance metrics.
